Paddling provides an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with the rich history and natural beauty of the Rideau Waterway Canadian Heritage River. Extending from Ottawa to Kingston in Eastern Ontario, the waterway is largely comprised of the Rideau Canal National Historic Site and UNESCO World Heritage Site, constructed between 1826 -1831. Designated a Canadian Heritage River in 2000 for its historical and recreational values, the waterway offers the perfect setting for relaxation and recreation, particularly for visitors travelling by canoe or kayak.

Learn-to-Paddle on a National Treasure
Since launching in 2022, Parks Canada’s Learn-to-Paddle program at Hartwells Lockstation in Ottawa has introduced over 5,600 participants to the joys of canoeing. Running five days a week throughout July and August, the program offers visitors of all ages and abilities an opportunity to learn essential paddling skills, water safety, and route planning, all while immersed in the beauty of this historic canal. Guided by enthusiastic Visitor Services staff and summer students, it’s a perfect way to connect with nature and history from a unique vantage point on the water. Lock & Paddle Returns to Ottawa
Parks Canada’s popular Lock & Paddle event makes its return to the Rideau Canal on July 19, 2025, in celebration of Canada’s Parks Day. Building on the success of the inaugural event in 2024, over 100 colourful kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are expected to gather at Hartwells Lockstation for a mass lock-through experience. Complete with music, entertainment, and family-friendly activities, Lock & Paddle offers paddlers of all skill levels a lively and memorable way to celebrate the season.

New for 2025, paddlers can enjoy free lockage for paddlecraft at all Rideau Canal lockstations on July 19. Lock & Paddle is a free event that does not require registration. More details about the event and how to participate will be available on the Rideau Canal website as the date approaches.
